The Hessenliga is one of the 14 Oberligas, that is, the regional leagues which constitute the current fifth tier of German football. The state (‘Land’) of Hesse has Wiesbaden as its capital and Frankfurt am Main as its major city. It is one of the very few regions of the planet lucky enough to have an element named after it (‘Hassium’, synthetic, highly unstable, atomic number 108). Non-physicist football fans, however, are more likely to be familiar with names such as Eintracht Frankfurt, SV Darmstadt and Wehen Wiesbaden.
Last season (22/23) Hanauer 1960 were promoted into this division as champions from the Verbandsliga Hessen-Süd (sixth tier) while TuS Dietkirchen flirted with relegation from it, before narrowly surviving.
As a point of interest, the word ‘Hessian’ has passed into the English language as the name of a type of fabric, so called because it was worn by the Hessian soldiers who fought on the British side in the American Revolutionary War.
Was great to meet You in Hanau. Today we play against Erlensee.
