Today I am in Berlin to watch my team (or at least they have been for the last 12 years or so).
If you have any interest in why Union Berlin are a slightly special club, and why someone like myself might be inclined to support them – check out this book: “Scheisse! We’re Going Up! The Unexpected Rise of Berlin’s Rebel Football Club” – by Kit Holden. One of the best football-related books of the last few years, quite moving and pretty funny in places. You don’t need to be a fan to enjoy it. Plus it’s in English.
As far as the football goes, I’m at the stadium but can’t get in. My e-ticket hasn’t arrived and there’s no one selling outside today. So I’ll probably watch it in the pub. I actually have a fairly (dis) honourable history of travelling to football games and then staying in the pub. I cherish a particularly fond memory of travelling to Bilbao for a match, and staying in a little bar with a TV instead, because the bartender shared my interest in whisky (and had the game on live). Happy Days!
