Nothing says “Christmas” more than a Glühwein and a tasty German sausage.
Another sausage that has protected status under EU law – the Thüringer Rostbratwurst, which is specific to the state of Thuringia. They take them pretty seriously in the region and there is now a museum in Holzhausen dedicated solely to its history (with its first documented reference appearing in 1404). Spiced with caraway, marjoram and garlic it is full of flavour and a little more ‘refined’ than a standard Bratwurst.
Purchased here at the Christmas market in Spandau ( make sure to check out the singing Moose above the Glühwein stall as you go in…) it’s a great start to the festive season.
Verdict: a spicy and satisfying 9/10
