Today’s clash sees 5th meet 11th in the Verbandsliga Südbaden (South Badenese Football Association), which is one of the 21 German state football associations. Military history note: the separation of North Baden from South Baden stems from the aftermath of WWII, when the former was occupied by the USA, and the latter by the French.
As such, this amateur league (unlike the 6th tier in England, which is semi-professional or even professional ) rests in the sixth tier of the German football pyramid.
Lahr sits about 30 minutes outside Freiburg im Breisgau, which lies in the Black Forest region of Germany – and currently boasts a 1.Bundesliga team of it’s own (but I couldn’t get tickets for that). So off we go.
