This game sees a relegated side take on a promoted side, as Jahn were demoted from the 2. Bundesliga last season, while Haching were promoted from the Regionalliga Bayern.
This is also a chance to see Regensburg, a famously well-preserved medieval city which boasts the wonderfully-named “Historic Sausage Kitchen of Regensburg” (“Historische Wurstküche zu Regensburg”). This is (supposedly) the oldest continuously open public restaurant in the world. We are in Bavaria – so I have slim hopes for a non-beast feast, but luckily I have a guest Sausage Correspondent™️ with me who is (notoriously) carnivorous.
Today we are in the South Stand here at the Jahnstadion, by which hangs a tale. The stand is named the Hans Jakob stand, after Jahn’s only ever German National team player, a goalkeeper who won 38 caps and was in the squad for 2 World Cups (1934 & 1938), while only playing in one game (the 3rd place play off in 1934). He didn’t play at all in 1938 though, due to the death of his 4 year-old daughter. Raising a (plastic) glass to him now.
