An amber (or red) lager, not particularly fond of these but this is a decent one – tastes a bit like a regular lager that has had geraniums standing in it for a week.
I like pubs that brew their own beer (not to be confused with breweries that own a bar, that’s a different badger). Anyway, while looking this beer up, I came across this explanation of the name, which I enjoyed and I am going to reproduce it here verbatim.
“The Bernsteinzimmer was an ornate room originally constructed in the 18th century out of amber panels, gold leaf and mirror for Berlin’s Royal Palace. Considered an eighth wonder of the world, it was later given as a gift from Friedrich Wilhelm to Tsar Peter the Great. The Bernsteinzimmer stayed in Russia until World War II when the Nazi Army moved it to Königsberg (today Kaliningrad). However, as the allies closed in, the Germans disassembled the room and packed it into crates. In the chaos of the war, it disappeared and has not been found since.”
Verdict: a solid but unremarkable 6.5/10
