I’m in Bonn today to see Bonner SC vs Siegburger SV in the Mittelrhein regional league. Neither of them are setting the division alight at the minute.
The only thing I know about Bonner SC is -probably – the only thing that most casual football fans like myself know about Bonner SC – namely that in 1999 they signed the entire Cuban national team on loan.
The owner had been impressed by their performance in a 2-0 loss against Brazil, and wanted to sign their best 3 players. But Fidel Castro insisted the team had to remain all together, so Bonn signed ALL of them. 15 footballers, 2 coaches, an interpreter, a masseur and a cook. Brilliant. It didn’t really work out though. For a more full account, see this newspaper article from 1999:

The Siegburgers, though, I have to admit I know literally nothing about – but looking through their recent history, they appear to be something of an ‘elevator’ team (we’d say ‘yo-yo’) between this league and the league below. I’ll try and compensate for my ignorance by travelling to Siegburg and attending a home game as soon as possible. And I do like their shirt, especially the deliciously sinuous ‘SSV’ crest.
